Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley
June 23 1910- January 27 2008
Pres. Hinckley passed away yesterday at about 7 pm due to age. He was the 15th President of the LDS church. He became the prophet, seer and revelator on March 12, 1995 after Pres. Howard W. Hunter passed away. Pres. Hinckley will always be known as the People's prophet. He did so much to connect with the people in this day in age. He has counseled church members to fellowship new convers, befriend members of other faiths, live exemplary lives and avoid the evils of the world.
People from all over the world have got to know Pres. Hinckley. He has been in the news media and the spotlight for various reasons. He had interviews with Larry King and Mike Wallace and many other worldwide reporters. Many people were interested in the LDS faith when the 2002 olympics were held here in SLC and people wanted to know and talk to Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley the "mormon". On June 23, 2004, Pres. Bush gave his the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. This award is the nation's highest civilian award, recognizes exceptional meritorious service.
At the time he became prophet, there was only 47 temples, now there are 124. He is an AMAZING man! Will be missed by many! His goal was to have 100 operating or temples under construction and that goal was accomplished with the dedication of the Boston temple on Oct. 1, 2000. He made is possible to have 3 temples made in the 3 cities that are infamous in the LDS church history; Nauvoo, IL; Palmyra, NY; and Winter Quarters, NE.
Pres. Hinckley's last public appearance was Jan.4, 2008 at the rededication of the Utah State Capital Building where he gave the dedicatory prayer. He is now reunited with his wife of almost 71 years. Marjorie Pay Hinckley passed away April 6, 2004.
People came to Temple Square last night to sing church hymns and the US flag is at half staff in memory in Pres. Hinckley. WHAT GREATER HERO!
